Las Cruces de Mayo is a festivity that takes place in the city of Cartagena on the first weekend of May, with the 3rd of this month being the big day of the crosses coinciding with the festival of Santa Elena. They are eminently southern festivals and in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia they are very important, especially in the province of Granada.
In las Cruces de Mayo, the traditional, pagan and religious character is mixed, in it the neighborhoods of Cartagena decorate their crosses, competing to get the most beautiful cross, using flowers, shawls or any other representative and significant motif. In the past, the rosary was recited and the bands played traditional songs from the Region of Murcia. Nowadays, the brio of the “Sevillanas” and the color of the streets decorated with lanterns stand out, and flamenco music plays throughout the city center. that moves between religious passion, fun and the joy of the people.
