Opera will return to the El Batel Auditorium in Cartagena on 19 October at 21:00 with ‘Carmen‘. The work, composed by Georges Bizet, is presented by the company Ópera 2001.

Considered one of the most popular operas in history, with a vibrant and passionate musical narration and staging. Its premiere was not without a certain amount of scandal, as it was unusual for the heroine of an opera to die on stage or to be as brazen as the protagonist of Carmen.

In this libretto set in early 19th century Seville, Bizet tells the story of Carmen, a hot-tempered gypsy who seduces Corporal Don José, causing him to abandon his former fiancée. Carmen’s relationship causes him to mutiny against his superior and as a deserter he joins a group of smugglers. Finally, when she turns her love to the bullfighter Escamillo, Don José’s jealousy drives him to murder her.

The company Ópera 2001 will stage this four-act tragedy in the original French with Spanish subtitles. Tickets are already on sale on the Auditorio El Batel website and in person at the auditorium box office.
